WHAT IS IMPAIRMENT?

Impairment is any loss or abnormality of psychological, physiological or anatomical; structure or function according to WHO in their International Classification of Impairment, Disability and Handicap.

Several Institutions has now added to their curriculum teaching about impairment and participation as a way to foster inclusive society for Persons with Disability.

Impairment can be a missing leg or eye, an unusual kidney or if any of the internal organs do not functions properly as expected.

Impairment is problems in body function or structure such as significant deviation or loss according to ICF 2001.

 THERE ARE SEVERAL TYPES OF IMPAIRMENT AND SOME OF THESE ARE;

  1. Cognitive limitations
  2. Balance Limitations
  3. Dimensional Extremes/limitation
  4. Sensory limitations
  5. Movement and Mobility limitation
  6. Voice/ Speech limitation

The above limitations can either result to loss of function, abnormality of structure and loss of structure.

Impairment is having a defective limb, organism or mechanism of the body.
