The Electricity Company of Ghana Has Raised Alarm On The Surging Of Fraudsters Who Are Going Round Duping Unsuspecting Customers Over Sale Of Prepaid Meters

The Electricity Company of Ghana in the Eastern Region has raised alarm on the surging of fraudsters who are going round duping unsuspecting customers over sale of prepaid meters.

According to the company, even in areas that prepaid meters are not utilized, the fraudsters go there deceiving occupants that the ECG needs to swap their meters for them and wind up charging them immense measure of money.

The fraudsters charge customers from as high as GHC500.00 to GHC2,000.00 with the arrangement of giving them another meter, a different meter or replacing a post-paid with a prepaid meter. This the ECG says is route higher than what it charges its customers.

Speaking to Ghanaweb in Koforidua, Eastern Regional Public relations Officer (PRO) for the ECG, Mary Eshun-Oppong, cautioned customers in the region, particularly in Koforidua, Akyem Oda, Akyem Tafo and Mpraeso to be additional alarm on exercises of such fraudsters.

The ECG PRO said however she was unable to give the specific number of cases answered to them by their customers, they are stressed over the increasing number of calls coming in with complaints that some corrupt persons are selling the meter to customers at unreasonable costs.

“We need to caution customers particularly customers around Tafo, Mpraeso, Koforidua and the whole Eastern region. We should be exceptionally careful of such persons. They will come and state they will need to swap your meter for you.

“In areas that we don’t have even have prepaid meters, you will see persons going round telling customers that they will change their post-paid meters for them and afterward give them prepaid meters. ECG we don’t do that.

“when there is such a venture, ECG will come round and instruct customers on the requirement for the undertaking. On the off chance that we need to supplant your post-paid meter to prepaid meter, we will come and explain it to you… to reveal to you the advantages of the prepaid meter.

“along these lines, we don’t send individuals round to gather monies from customers… and we don’t manage center men or ‘gorro young men’,” the PRO told Ghanaweb.

She encouraged customers to consistently go themselves to the ECG office nearer to them to execute their businesses than using mediators who wind up defrauding them.

Ms. Eshun-Oppong indicated that another meter ought not cost more than GHC400.00 when the nearest post isn’t in excess of 40 meters while a different meter costs an aggregate of GHC92.00.

She added that customers ought not compensation the ECG installers who come to install their meters for them as their compensation has just been figured into the sums expressed.

“Customers shouldn’t pay money to the installer, the contractor who comes to install the meter. You shouldn’t pay anything to him on the grounds that the contractor is being paid by ECG. He should request any installment.

“Whatever installment will be made in the office and afterward you get a receipt for paying any sum. But assigned bonded clerks in certain networks,” she said.
